Dalma( Mix of Lentils &Vegetables)

What is it ?

  • Can be taken with Roti,Paratha,Rice,Naan&Chapati

  • Very less use of Spices
  • It is aromatic & wholesome food

Ingredients Used :

  • 1 cup Arhar Dal (Toor Dal)
  • 1  cubed Potatoes
  • 1/2  cubed Carrot
  • 1 small bowl cut smaller pieces of Pumpkin
  • 1/2 chopped  Eggplant or Brinjal  
  • 1 small bowl cut smaller pieces Papaya 
  • 1 chopped & cubed Raw Banana
  • 1   chopped Tomato
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee
  • 5-6 Dry Red Chilli
  • 1 teaspoon of Cumin & Mustard Seeds(for tempering purpose)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder or Haldi Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Roasted  Cumin powder or Jeera Powder
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt , according to taste
  • coconut slices(optional)

Preparation :

  1. After cutting all the vegetables,we will put in a pressure cooker.
  2. Roast Cumin Seeds(Jeera) & dry red chilli for sometime in a pan.After getting a nice aroma from it,cool it off and then grind it to make a powder.
  3. Add the vegetables, lentils(washed and soaked for 20 mins), turmeric powder,salt ,grated ginger and 4-5 cups of water into the pressure cooker.Cook until you get couple of whistles. After that, turn the heat to low and simmer for 5-6 minutes.
  4. The veggies and lentils will continue to cook in the pressure cooker as long as there is pressure.
  5. For Tempering purpose,heat the ghee in a pan on medium heat and add the dry red chilies, mustard and cumin seeds till you get the nice aroma & put it in the pressure cooker.
  6. Add this grind ed powder of Cumin seeds & dry red chili to the pressure cooker and give it a good stir on low heat .Check for the requirement of salt and water according to your taste.
  7. At last,garnish it with coriander leaves & thin slices of coconut(optional) and our Dalma is ready to be served.
