What is OCD?

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where:

  • You get repeated unwanted thoughts (obsessions)
  • And you feel a strong urge to do certain actions again and again (compulsions) to reduce anxiety.

Note:It’s not about being “extra clean” or “perfectionist.”
It’s about feeling very anxious unless you do something
repeatedly.

Causes (Why does it happen?)

There isn’t just one cause. It usually happens because of a mix of:

  • Brain chemistry differences (serotonin imbalance)
  • Genetics (can run in families)
  • Stress or trauma
  • Certain personality traits (very responsible, sensitive, anxious)

It’s important to know OCD is not a weakness.

Symptoms

Obsessions (Unwanted Thoughts)

These are thoughts that:

  • Keep coming again and again
  • Cause fear, guilt, or anxiety
  • Are hard to control

Few Examples: “What if the door is not locked?“What if I touched something dirty and get sick?”Fear of hurting loved ones accidentally.

Interesting fact :The person usually knows these thoughts don’t make sense — but they still feel real .

 Compulsions (Repeated Actions)

To reduce anxiety, the person may:

  • Wash hands many times
  • Check locks repeatedly
  • Repeat prayers or words
  • Arrange things “perfectly”
  • Ask for reassurance again and again

These actions give temporary relief, but the anxiety comes back.

When is it OCD and not just normal habit?

Everyone checks things sometimes. It becomes OCD when:

  • It takes a lot of time (more than 1 hour daily)
  • It affects work, family, or daily life
  • It causes distress and exhaustion
  • The person feels they “can’t stop”

Treatment (Very Important – OCD is Treatable!)

Good news is that — OCD is highly treatable.

✅ 1. Therapy (Most effective)

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
  • Special type: ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention)

In ERP: You slowly face the fear. And learn not to do the compulsion.Anxiety reduces naturally over time.

✅ 2. Medication

Doctors may prescribe:

SSRIs (antidepressants that help serotonin).Medication helps reduce intensity so therapy becomes easier.

✅ 3. Combination

Best results often come from:Therapy + Medication together

Very Important to Understand

People with OCD:

  • Are NOT crazy
  • Are NOT dangerous
  • Are often very caring and responsible
  • Actually suffer because they care too much
